In these times of crisis a change in wages, an unexpected car repair or an unforeseen medical emergency can become the breaking point for a family normally able to support itself.
“A married couple with two young children lost their home to foreclosure in December 2008. They located an apartment to rent in Burke. One of the parents works in construction and the other in telemarketing. Both have seen a dramatic reduction in their work hours. They are struggling to pay their rent and utility payments and also to buy food.”
“A single woman in her 50s rents an apartment in Springfield. She has worked as a home health aide for the past five years. She was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and will be in treatment for the next six months. Her doctor advised her that she will not be able to work during this period. She does not want to lose her home.”
“A family needs assistance to pay their past due rent. One of the parents was laid off in May and qualified for unemployment benefits. The other parent was laid off in November and is still awaiting benefits. Both continue to search for employment. Their savings are now exhausted. Prior to this, both parents had steady employment for more than 10 years. They fear that they will end up homeless. ”
